In February, Nepalese advocate Amar Timalsina visited Australia to meet with those working to end leprosy transmission.
Amar, a person with a lived experience of leprosy, has seen his life radically transformed through The Leprosy Mission. Today, he is a passionate global advocate, sharing his story in forums worldwide, including at the United Nations. His visit was a profound reminder of why our mission matters and how we can continue making a difference.
Amar’s journey has been one of immense hardship, resilience, and transformation. He was diagnosed with leprosy at just twelve years old after years of suffering. Yet, receiving his diagnosis did not bring Amar immediate relief.
Instead, he faced even greater hardship. Once embraced by his community, he was isolated—even by close friends and family. Gossip and the belief that leprosy was a curse fuelled discrimination, leaving Amar feeling rejected and unable to attend school or participate in daily life.
These experiences led Amar into deep despair, and he battled suicidal feelings for a long time, attempting to end his life on several occasions.

A turning point came when the compassionate doctors and caregivers treating Amar at Anandaban Hospital who were providing his medical care learned how deeply Amar was suffering emotionally. In the following months and years, they worked together to provide Amar with the emotional support to restore his dignity and hope.
The Medical Superintendent at Anandaban Hospital (TLM Nepal), Dr. Wim Thevenet, recognised Amar’s potential and gave him the opportunity to continue his education in Kathmandu. This kindness paved the way for his future as a leader and advocate.
Now, Amar is a strong voice for those affected by leprosy. He has worked tirelessly to dismantle misconceptions, and his advocacy has led to significant progress in Nepal. While stigma has lessened, challenges remain—particularly in rural areas where poverty and lack of awareness contribute to delayed diagnoses, treatment, and subsequent disabilities.
Profound struggles have also marked Amar’s personal journey. After facing the pain of divorce due to stigma, he endured further hardships, including alcoholism. Yet, his faith brought him renewed hope and purpose. Today, he leads initiatives that empower individuals affected by leprosy, helping them regain dignity and reintegrate into society.

Thanks to Amar’s advocacy, Nepal is moving toward abolishing discriminatory laws against individuals affected by leprosy. His triumph over rejection, discrimination, and suffering is a testament to resilience and faith. His story is a beacon of hope, and with your continued support, we can help others receive the care, dignity, and opportunities they deserve.
