Music fans and film lovers alike were saddened by news of Kris Kristofferson’s death on Saturday, 28 September, at age 88.
Luminaries in both industries have extended tributes to the award-winning country music singer and actor.
“What a great loss, What a great writer, What a great actor, What a great friend. I will always love you,” Dolly Parton posted to Instagram.
Barbra Streisand shared, “The first time I saw Kris performing at the Troubadour club in L.A. I knew he was something special. Barefoot and strumming his guitar, he seemed like the perfect choice for a script I was developing, which eventually became A Star Is Born.”
Kristofferson passed away “peacefully” at his home in Hawaii on Saturday, surrounded by family.
Australian audiences will be able to see Kristofferson’s acting prowess on cinema screens around Australia when screenings of the remastered iconic 1999 film Molokai: The Story of Father Damien begin later this month.
Visually spectacular, Molokai tells the true story of Damien, an inspiring, trail-blazing nineteenth-century priest who voluntarily moved to a Hawaiian leprosy settlement to care for the people there.
Kristofferson plays a significant role in Molokai as Rudolph Meyer, the Lutheran administrator of the colony, and features some brilliantly delivered lines. [Pictured second from left in pic above and below.]

Molokai’s screenings are being hosted by The Leprosy Mission Australia to celebrate the organisation’s global 150th anniversary and to shine a light on the opportunity to make leprosy a thing of the past. Fittingly, 2024 is also the film’s 25th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of Father Damien’s canonization.
However, fans of Kristofferson will need to move quickly to secure tickets to see the great on the big screen again, with only ten events planned nationally at this stage.
