Why We Care So Much About Shoes

Shoes carry more meaning than we often realise.

They mark moments of transition: the first tiny pair bought for a child learning to walk, the school shoes scuffed at the toes by playground soccer, the sensible pair chosen for work, the boots pulled on for long days, heels kicked off as soon as you’re in the door.

Shoes follow us through our lives, quietly recording where we’ve been and what we’ve carried.

They can also signal belonging. Having shoes that fit, protect, and allow you to move safely through the world is often taken for granted. Yet it is deeply symbolic of security, dignity and freedom. Shoes enable people to walk without fear of injury. To go where they need to go. To participate fully in daily life.

Everyday shoes representing different stages of life and movement

That’s why shoes sit at the heart of Leprosy Mission Australia’s Christmas appeal this year.

For people affected by leprosy, feet matter in a way most of us never have to think about. When leprosy damages nerves, it steals sensation. Pain—the body’s early warning system—disappears. Without it, a small cut, a hot surface, or a stone underfoot can become a serious injury without being noticed at all.

In parts of southern India, many people affected by leprosy still walk barefoot, not by choice, but because poverty, stigma and isolation limit access to protection and care. Each step carries risk. An untreated wound can lead to infection, disability, loss of livelihood, and exclusion from community life.

This is where something as ordinary as a pair of shoes becomes extraordinary.

Protective sandals, explicitly designed for numb feet, help prevent injuries before they start. They protect skin, preserve mobility, and allow people to continue working, caring for family, and participating in their communities. They are not a luxury. They are a safeguard.

This Christmas, Leprosy Mission Australia’s Sole Saver appeal focuses on precisely that kind of practical, preventative care.

A $20 gift can provide a pair of protective sandals. Larger gifts support wound care, training, and education so people can recognise and respond to leprosy early.

But the impact goes beyond physical protection.

Dhwani was just ten years old when leprosy began to steal the feeling in her feet. For years, she walked barefoot, unaware of the damage happening beneath her. Today, with protective sandals made through Leprosy Mission Australia-supported programs, she walks with confidence and dignity.

“These shoes… they protect me,” she says. “Without them, I would not feel the injuries that could destroy my feet.”

Her words capture why shoes matter so much in this work. They represent safety, yes—but also independence, confidence, and the ability to look forward.

This focus on shoes also naturally connects to Leprosy Mission Australia’s gift shop, where the ‘Thongs that Matter’ range. When you buy a pair for yourself, proceeds from the purchase of the thongs go toward providing adapted shoes to protect the vulnerable feet of people affected by leprosy and disability in a developing country where The Leprosy Mission projects support. It’s the perfect Christmas gift for an Aussie summer!

The shop’s Gifts of Love range allows supporters to give practical aid to people in need, such as a goat, a child’s scholarship or a cure package. This season, there is also an option to donate towards Christmas shoes, along with vital medical care, sustainable livelihoods and community education. Each gift is a practical expression of care, grounded in real need and real impact.

There’s something quietly powerful about all this. In a season often marked by excess, shoes remind us of what is essential. The freedom to be protected. Freedom of movement. The ability to stand and walk with dignity.

Perhaps that’s why shoes resonate so deeply. They sit at the intersection of the everyday and the life-changing. They are ordinary objects that make an extraordinary difference when they are missing—or when they are finally provided.

Walking forward with safety and dignity thanks to protective footwear

This Christmas, caring about shoes is really about caring about people. About preventing harm before it happens. About ensuring that no one’s future is shaped by something so avoidable as an unprotected step.

Comfort and joy, after all, are not abstract ideas. Sometimes, they look like a safe pair of sandals—and the freedom to walk forward without fear.

And that means we can actually give someone comfort and joy this Christmas. What a gift!
